“What’s Up Lincoln? ” Podcast

Our school podcast “What’s Up Lincoln?” has just uploaded the fourth podcast on our school website with a fifth being edited and hopefully uploaded within the week.  If you would like the hear the podcasts, please follow this link. You will find the podcasts under students – Trojan Radio.

Our podcast topics so far are…

  1. Tongue Twisters
  2. Kardamimmit – a Finland girls singing group who gave a concert at our school.
  3. Gavin Carter – local guitarist who spent a day at our school playing guitar and inspiring our students to learn to play the guitar. In grades 3-5 we learn to play guitars in the months of April and May.
  4. Lincoln Elementary Boys and Girls Basketball Teams 2017-18
  5. (coming soon!) Lincoln Elementary Clubs – running, STEAM, spelling bowl, gardening
  6. (coming soon!) Are You Choosing Band or Orchestra at Bedford Middle School Next Year? This podcast will feature our 5th graders who are moving on to middle school next year. We will also interview the BMS orchestra teacher, Mrs. Greenwood and BMS Band Teacher, Mr. Merback.

We have two more possible topics – “ Lincoln Elementary Talent Show” and “What Are Your Plans for the Summer?”  However, we are running out of school year and time. Working on our podcasts has been a labor of love, and I have learned a lot – both positive and negative.

The positive things are….

  • It is a joy to work with 14 high-ability, highly motivated students with lots of great ideas. This group is a pleasure to work with and in spite of limited time, we have accomplished a lot!
  • Thanks to a local grant I was able to buy a nice microphone and equipment to start our podcast. I am partial to the Blue Mics.
  • The staff at Lincoln has been very supportive of the podcast.
  • YouTube is a great place to learn about podcasting and editing
  • Audacity is great, free recording software.

The negative things are…

  • I see the children once a week for 30 minutes to work on the podcast. All the staff has been great about letting me work things in here and there, but our school days are full with little extra time.
  • Since I’m not in a dedicated recording studio – beware of background noises – rattling papers, squeaky chairs, whispering in the background, walking around the room – the mic picks it up.
  • Edit as you go, or you will spend hours editing.

I would highly recommend that you try a podcast!  It’s a great way to inform parents and the local community about what’s going on in your school!
